What is downside protection and why you need it?

A simple question - what assets do you currently hold that can perform well when asset prices are falling?

Most investors have a portfolio that relies heavily on rising asset prices to generate a profit. For example, if you hold property and shares, they may generate a small dividend or rental return, but a significant portion of the returns come from the increase in the value of the asset.
